Open 365 days a year and part of The Ohio State Universities Agricultural Research and Development Center, this free attraction draws in over 10,000 visitors each year. The arboretum features themed gardens with over 2,500 plants, including herbaceous and woody plants that all offer unique colors and textures.
The arboretum began in 1909 when Edmund Secrest designed and brought the concept to life. The arboretum is home to multiple champion trees such as the Giant Dogwood, Nikko Fir, Japanese Larch, and the Nordmann Fir.
If you are looking for fun things to do in northeastern Ohio (Oh, and I forgot to mention that it is FREE), the arboretum would be a great place to visit.
Activities include:
Arboretum Events: A wide variety of events are held on-site each year. If you are looking for someplace special for a family reunion or a wedding venue, check out the Secrest Arboretum website to learn more about events and rentals.
The Secrest Maze- created from Thuja occidentalis, the maze is a fun activity for the entire family. Especially those captivated by the labyrinth in the Triwizard Tournament of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Themed Gardens: With 110 acres and over 2,500 varieties of plants, the themed gardens are sure to delight and inspire. Some of the guests' favorites include Gayles Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden, Katie's Songbird Garden, Nancy's Tranquil Haven, and the Ohio Native Garden, just to name a few. In total, the arboretum has 15 themed gardens.
For a truly unforgettable experience, be sure to visit the Garden of Legend and Romance. Located near the Seaman Orientation Plaza at the front of the grounds, you can find more than 500 roses grown in an English Rose Garden design.
The grounds at Secrest are perfect for a relaxing stroll, a brisk wall, picnic, business retreat, some alone and reflection time, or a great day outdoors with friends and family.
It is important to note that I was here in the very early spring - so, my pictures do not show the full beauty of aboretum during peak seasons.
