Liberty Aviation Museum

Port Clinton

If you enjoy history, especially Ohio history, then this is a trip that I would highly recommend making. Liberty Aviation Museum, formerly The Port Clinton Airport was at one time home to Island Airlines. Island Airlines flew between Port Clinton and the Lake Erie Islands.

Start your visit off at the Tin Goose Diner, which is conveniently attached to the museum. Initially, the diner operated as the Sunrise Diner in Pennsylvania (built in the 1950s). As soon as you walk up to the hostess stand, you will feel the sense of history that will accompany this visit. From the traditional diner bench seating to the stools along the diner’s bar, everyone in your group will be fascinated by this look back in history. While eating, you can watch airplanes take off and land at the Erie-Ottawa International Airport adjacent to the museum. If you are lucky enough, you never know what you might see landing or take off – private jets to classic aircraft, including the historic Ford Tri-Motor. Proceeds from the restaurant to help support the Liberty Air Museum.

The giant two-hangar facility features authentic memorabilia and warcraft from World War II. Once inside the museum, you can get up close to featured airplanes, special exhibits, and memorabilia from the local region that shares the history of flight in this region, including flights to and from the Lake Erie Islands. Be sure to see the “Tin Goose,” a classic plane that helped transport residents and their supplies year-round to island residents from the mainland during the winter months when the ferry service was unavailable. From the aircraft, watercraft, vehicles, memorabilia, and the knowledgeable volunteers (they are full of all kinds of stories), they say to plan 2 ½ hours for your visit – honestly, if you are like me, I would plan at least half of a day.

The Liberty Air Museum is a tax-exempt 501©(3) non-profit organization. The museum receives no government grants or funding to operate the facility, air or watercraft, or fund restoration projects. As I mentioned above, proceeds from the Tin Goose Diner help support the museum. However, they accept contributions (tax-deductible), and they offer family, individual, couple, and student memberships.
